​Foreign Bodies in the Eye

A foreign body in the eye can be anything - a piece of dust or some other substance. It can be glass, wood, metal, plastic, sand, etc. Usually, they are tiny, so we don’t notice.

Foreign Bodies Injuries Symptoms

  • Pain

  • Tearing

  • Redness

  • Blurred vision

  • Sensitivity to light

The eyes often clean itself of debris through tears.

However, there is some first aid care:

  • Do not rub the eyes

  • Lift up your upper eyelid up and out over the lower lid, and then roll your eyes around

  • Flush your eyes generously with water and keep your eyes open during flushing

  • Follow up with the doctor to make sure all debris is gone, and the eyes have not damaged or scratched

  • If there is an object embedded (not on the surface) do not remove it, as this may cause further damage. Instead, cover the eye with an eye shield and seek prompt medical help

Protect your eyes with protective eyewear when playing any sport that can pose a danger of foreign objects injuries.

 

Keep your eyes safe at home! The best way to do this is to wear eye protection when using hazardous things.
